Rotary Club of Weston

The Rotary Club of Weston has been a part of the landscape of the City of Weston since December 18, 1986, and today is recognized as one of the leading community service organizations in Southwest Broward County. As we approach the threshold of our 25th anniversary year the Club’s leadership has adopted an ambitious agenda that expands our local community service activities and, as a part of Rotary International, extends our reach to communities through the world.

At the Rotary Club of Weston we focus our community service activities in the areas of Services to Youth (including education / scholarship / learning development) and, Services to Families In Need. We address the service needs of the Southwest Broward community through volunteerism, the application of member skills, organizational resources, and a menu of fundraising activities and events. Some of you may have participated and/or attended our events such as the annual “Scholarship Golf Classic” at Weston Hills CC, the annual “Run for Tomorrow & Family Festival” (formerly known as the “Rotary Holiday Run”), and our annual “Rock & Pop Masters Free Concert in the Park”, which we produce in cooperation with the City of Weston.

Over the past two decades the Rotary Club of Weston has awarded more than $600,000 in college scholarships to hundreds of graduating seniors from Cypress Bay and Western High Schools; young men and women of our community who have clearly demonstrated an exceptional combination of academic achievement and commitment to community service. Weston Rotary has also contributed more than $500,000 from its annual “Run for Tomorrow & Family Festival” to local charities, non-profit organizations, and the Rotary Foundation.

The more than 100 men and women of the Rotary Club of Weston are business owners and managers, doctors, lawyers, engineers, accountants, educators, artists, clergy, energetic retirees and, most importantly ... your neighbors. Rotary provides each member with a unique opportunity to serve others by participating in projects to enhance the community and to help those in need throughout the world. From its inception, the Rotary Club of Weston is committed to participating in activities and raising funds for community and international projects.

Presidents Message

Weston Rotary President Dan YoungWe sadly sent our exchange students home after almost a year in our custody and care.

Severin back to Austria on July 5 and Sergio to Spain on July 6. The tearful farewells at the airport always impresses me as to the power of the lifelong connections and impact we have had with these young people and how this program truly exemplifies the Rotary motto of "Building Bridges of Peace through Understanding' and dare I add "and love". Within a little more than week later, former exchange student Jeppe Stensbaek Jensen from Denmark returned to Weston with his parents, Hans Jorgen and Annette and brother Rasmus for a visit for 4 day visit. We hosted a reception with a turnout of 30 people for this reunion. Looking forward, during the week of August 8, two new exchange students will be arriving from Denmark and Norway for this life altering experience.

We welcomed back Past President Deborah O'Connor who was on a leave of absence due to her hectic work and personal schedule and J.M. Padron who has rejoined our club after moving to downtown Ft. Lauderdale after several years.

The CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) program which the City of Weston initiated in partnership with the Rotary Club of Weston launched its program with the first of 8 training sessions on July 27, 2011 with Fire Chief Harris Bouchillon as the instructor and Larry Herman as our club CERT leader. If you have an interest in joining this vital team, it's not to late attend the next session which is held on Wednesdays at 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Make ups will be arranged to complete the training program.

Several other hands-on projects took place in July such as the Susan B Anthony event on 7/23/11 and the Salute a Marine project which resulted in the collection and shipment of 130 care packages to our servicemen abroad.

Julian Gazzano, chair of New Generations Committee arranged for us to meet with the new principal of Western High School, Dave Jones who replaced Scott Fiske who was transferred. Thanks to Mike Works, Vice-Principal and honorary member of our club, the transition appears to be seamless.

Speaker chairs Tom Kallman and Joel Fass arranged for several interesting speakers. Looking forward, you can expect to hear some interesting speakers except for two weeks a month where the program involves the Student of the Month or the Club Assembly. As an example on August 11, 2011 we have Terry Henry, Brigadier General , US Army (Retired) former commander of Special Ops Airborne talk to us about leadership.

All of our major committees are hard at work to fulfill the vision and mission of the Rotary Club of Weston - to be of meaningful service to our community and our world.

Join us if you haven't already and be an active member of our team. You are vital to our success. Together we can achieve great things and make a difference!
