The Get Fit Weston Campaign is now in full swing and there is lots of buzz around Weston about people getting fit; very exciting!! The December 12th Rotary Run For Tomorrow will be a good test of your fitness. If you have not registered for Get Fit Weston and the Rotary Run For Tomorrow, there is still time; just click www.GetFitWeston.com. The Rotary Club of Weston is proud to be partnering with the City of Weston and the Cleveland Clinic in the Get Fit Weston campaign. These organizations are serious about Fitness!!

With 100+ members, the Rotary Club of Weston is committed to making a difference in the lives of Youth and Families in our community. One of the attributes that makes Rotary really special is the internationality of Rotary. There are over 1.2 million Rotarians in 200 Countries and Geographical areas, who are making a difference in their respective communities, while at the same time addressing global issues like the eradication of Polio. Rotary’s global reach and local impact is only possible through strong non-Rotarian partnerships. Some of these partners are part of the Family of Rotary and include:

• Spouses and spouse groups
• Children, parents and other relatives
• Families of deceased Rotarians
• Youth Exchange students and their families
• Interactors, Rotaractors and RYLArians
• GSE team members, Ambassadorial Scholars and alumni
• Global Networking Groups

There are two exciting Global Networking Groups that I would like to talk about, “The International Fellowship of Scouting Rotarians,” and the “International Fellowship Cycling to Serve.” Rotary International has been a partner with the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides in serving young people since their inception. As Rotary spread around the world, its support of Scouting and Girl Guiding also spread. In 1916, Rotarians in Edinburgh, Scotland, joined by 100 local Scouts, organized a special Christmas party for children whose fathers were serving in World War I. In 1922, the Rotary Club of Manila, Philippines, established a local Scout council. Rotary Clubs from Australia to Brunei built huts for Girl Guide groups. On November 4, 2010, the Rotary Club of Weston recognized Eagle and Gold Award recipients from local scout troops at a special Rotary Breakfast.

The International Fellowship Cycling to Serve is a group of Rotarians dedicated to promoting cycling as an opportunity for fellowship. The objectives of our Fellowship are to develop and promote world-wide friendship through cycling both competitive and touristic; to serve the community locally, nationally and internationally through cycling activities; to promote international understanding and peace through cycling activities. On any given Saturday morning you will see a group of Rotarians at the Rotary Pavilion in the Weston Regional Park warming up to start their ride around Weston.

In closing, I would like to congratulate two local Weston residents who were the recipients of the Rotary Humanitarian Awards at a special breakfast on November 11, 2010 at Weston Hills Country Club. Dr. Barry Schwartz and Dr. Brian Cross were part of a five doctor team who decided to go to Haiti on a medical relief effort coordinated through Project Medishare. This team treated victims of the devastating earthquake, earlier this year that left two hundred and fifty thousand dead, more than one million homeless and three million people in need of emergency aid.

We meet every Thursday morning from 7:30 – 8:30 AM at Weston Hills Country Club for breakfast and a lively program.
