“New Generations”: A Weston Rotary Commitment

Our City Weston November 2010

By Rod McLeod, PR & Marketing Committee Chair, Rotary Club of Weston

Among the most gratifying experiences we enjoy as Weston Rotarians is our longstanding involvement with the youth of our community. And, as we strive to inspire these young people, we find ourselves inspired by their exceptional talents in the arts, the sciences, social studies, athletics, as well as their personal commitment to serving our community and to bettering the world around us.

We also draw inspiration from those in our community who directly serve the needs of our youth: educators, instructors, counselors, advisors, coaches and administrators. Many of them are partners with Weston Rotary in implementing and delivering our “New Generations” initiatives. For example, working in concert with the administration of Cypress Bay and Western High Schools we sponsor Interact Clubs at both schools.

Interact has become a worldwide phenomenon, and one of the most significant and fastest-growing Rotary programs, with more than 10,700 Interact Clubs in 109 countries and geographical areas, involving almost 200,000 young people including those in our own community. And, at the college-level we sponsor Rotaract Clubs at Nova Southeastern University and Broward College.

The hallmark of Weston Rotary’s “New Generations” commitment is our longstanding scholarship program which recognizes graduating seniors at Cypress Bay and Western High Schools. Working with the administration and faculty of each school our scholarship committee selects our student honorees based on academic achievement and a demonstrated commitment to community service. In the past year alone, more than sixty students in our community have been recognized by Weston Rotary either as “Students of the Month”, or at our annual “Scholarship Breakfast”.
