Role of the Community Service Committee

Community Service is at the core of the Rotary Club of Weston’s purpose. Through Community Service, the Rotary Club of Weston seeks to affirm and provide an important venue for “Service Above Self.”

The Rotary Club of Weston focuses on projects where the Club can provide volunteers or funding that render services for children and families in need. While our geographic center is Weston, our projects can include addressing needs in greater Broward County. We seek to undertake projects that can best utilize the Rotary Club of Weston’s member resources. These include the Club’s human capital, its member talents, interests, time and capability availability. Community service opportunities are designed to produce results and as a side benefit, provide personal and club pride.

Promoting Visibility Inside and Outside the Club

Community Service programs provide an opportunity for small and large groups of beneficiaries in our community to enjoy and appreciate the generosity of club members. Rotary of Weston has earned a strong recognition in the community for solving needs in a wide variety of places and ways. Club members have demonstrated an interest in hands on, “one on one” as well as in “many for more” challenges. The Club lends its human and financial support to a many worthwhile projects.

Current programs include assisting with students’ educational, well being and mentoring needs, feeding needy families at Thanksgiving (Harvest Drive), assisting adult individuals re-entering society (Susan B. Anthony) , providing support and assistance to veterans, and providing gifts and support where member’s resources can make a difference. Members are encouraged to suggest projects where the Club’s capabilities and efforts can meet a need and provide a service.

Programs of the Community Service Committee
  • HCH - Helping Children Heal: This outreach into our community is specifically to help children in their current circumstance. We go their living area, do crafts and musical activities and read to these children.
  • In-Sync With Autism: Each year the Rotary of Weston puts on 2 concerts specifically for Autistic children. These concerts are usually interactive, the children can clap, sing, run around, and shout while the entertainment is going on.
  • Literacy: The literacy program is new to us this year. We are endeavoring to assist our community by providing much needed books at the Weston Library. We are dedicating a book in each speaker at our weekly Rotary meetings name. These are books that our local library has requested. Then we are setting up a program with Children's Harbor, where Rotarians will go to the residence and read to the foster children of Children's Harbor. We have also a program in place where Rotarians will go in and read to Veterans of the Sandy Nininger V.A. Center, who can no longer read because of sight problems.
  • Harvest Drive: Each year, we collect and provide school supplies and backpacks to the underprivileged children can be ready to go to school. These children are chosen by the school social services and are given to these children discreetly. In late October we begin collecting canned goods from our Rotary family so that by Thanksgiving, we have staple food items for many of our communities’ disadvantaged families. Just before Thanksgiving, Rotarians gather at Western High School to distribute food to needy families. This is a three day process where Rotary volunteers go to the school and sort and bag food for the families. We all have a great time, then on the last day, more volunteers are needed to help distribute to food to our families.
  • Elder Support: The Sandy Nininger V.A. nursing home has become an opportunity for our Rotary club to support our veterans. Rotarians will be holding poker parties, cook out, and giving of books for their library. We have also teamed up with our Literacy program so that we can read to our veterans who can no longer see clearly enough to read for themselves.
  • Gift Of Giving Program is a well-established program where we give of our own "gently used" clothing, books, and household items" Just because we no longer use or need am item , does not mean the item is no longer useful" Get your friends and family members to contribute to the needy of our community.
